Bio Maud

Maud Bekaert was born in Bruges in 1976.

In 1993, she started her education in letter sculpting

After a few months she had deeply fallen under the spell of letters, stone, the hammer, the chisel and ink, which made her take classes with Brody Neuenschwander in order to perfect her craft.

In 1996 she established herself as a self-employed letter sculptress and she has had her own studio and shop in the city centre of Bruges since 2003 (Sint-Clarastraat 40. Open from 10am to 12 noon & from 2pm to 6pm on Fridays, and from 10am until 1pm on Saturdays. Other days visits are only possible upon appointment).

Since 2007 Maud has been setting up letter sculpting workshops in the South African slum of Khayelitsha and started a cooperative that employs youngsters as letter carvers in early 2009.
She has attended workshops by Carl Rorhs (US), Tom Perkins (UK), Gaynor Goffe (UK), Yves Leterme (BE) and Lieve Cornil (BE) and others.

Maud Bekaert exhibits her work both in Belgium and abroad.
